Virtual Reality and User Interface Exploration Opportunity for Students

with Holos

Calling all undergraduate and graduate students from all majors.

Calling undergraduate and graduate students from all majors looking for hands-on experience with virtual reality and augmented reality exploring novel user interfaces that are centered on the hands.

Holos is a Madison-based spatial computing startup, started at UW-Madison 5 years ago and now has a world-class team of 13 people. Holos’s work is with teachers, the U.S. Air Force, and soon, the Space Force, to enable them to easily create and deploy immersive learning experiences. Holos recently participated in the Techstars Starburst Space accelerator program in LA and are forging new connections in the Space industry.

This Fall there are opportunities for students to explore virtual reality and augmented reality experiences, mainly focused on the hands. Students can expect to:

  • Gain Hands-On Experience Work in vitual reality to create and develop interactive experiences for users focused on training and educating with “hands-on experiences” in virtual reality. Leave the experience with a solid understanding of the market, the technologies, and the design approaches that Holos uses everyday.

  • Create Industry Connections Connect with industry professionals within the virtual reality and augmented reality industry. Work closely with the Holos team throughout the exploration and project.

Students will have access to the Holos staff of 13 team members, with their collective experiences coming from the video game and VR/AR industries, in the form of office hours and direct responses via email to questions from the students. Suggested reading materials (web and print) will be provided. Access to VR hardware may be available, depending on the situation.

Key Dates:
  1. October 5: Define work plans and learning outcomes in a virtual work session
  2. October 12-November 12: Take part in weekly work sessions and engage with mentors
  3. November 19: Present a virtual poster session to an industry audience
General Goals for the Blog Post

Students will explore novel user interfaces in virtual and augmented reality that are centered around the hands and present their ideas, and, ideally, implementations of new VR/AR user interface elements at the end of the semester in the form of a blog post. The post will focus on one type of UI interaction (ex. a file browser, color picker, contact book, or web browser) and will include:

  • Introduction
  • Supplementary research
  • An outline of the approach

The post should be supplemented with sketches, physical mockups, and/or videos that appropriately portray the idea in action.

General Goals for Showcase:

The Showcase is a great opportunity to share what you’ve learned, sharpen your presentation skills, and have skills and experience to add to your resume.

  1.  Describe the problem to solve or idea you worked on with your virtual reality project
  2. Provide backgrounding and research
  3. Describe what you experimented with
  4. Share what you learned
  5. Identify potential expansion opportunities, use cases
